The majority of success with British Blues at Wilodge stems from our very first animal bought. Maybrock Fleur was bought from Chelford as a calf on a recipient in the late 1980’s and is by Isaac Des templiers out of Granada D’en Haut.
She has bred exceedingly well for us both from a pedigree and commercial point of view. Her first calf was a Limousin who was shown as a steer. The DA was reserve champion at the first Royal Welsh Winter Fair and won Banbury Fatstock. Another Wilbeback was champion at Birmingham primestock show in 1993, while another Mork was supreme champion steer and reserve crossbred at Smithfield in 1996. He killed out at an amazing S4L.
Fleur is also the mother of Wilodge Optimist, a bull that has been used commercially and is the only bull to sire both the live and dead champion at the Scottish Winter Fair.
She has also bred Wilodge Ofleur who was sold to Crawford Brothers for 5000gns and is the granddam of Tofleur who was junior champion and exhibitor bred champion at the Royal Show in 2002 and who sold for 3200gns to Jim Innes. Tofleur in turn bred Wilodge Afleur who sold on the same day for 4000gns to Andrew Ewing.
Fleur is also granddam of the great Wilodge Ulex. Ulex is by As de Trefle Du Vanova out of Wilodge Ofleur and was Royal Show champion in 2006 and champion at the Royal Welsh and Great Yorkshire in both 2005 and 2006.
Ulex has sired many great females, two of which have been sold recently to Andrew Price’s Bedgebury herd as foundation females. Of those two, Wilodge Cover Girl was female and reserve overall champion at the Royal Show in 2009 for Andrew.
In May 2007 Wilodge held a production sale of British Blue cattle and still hold the record price of 30,000gns for the sale of Radieuse, who went to Crawford Brothers. On the same day we sold Wilodge Way To Go by Cubitus out of Wilodge Pandora for 12,000gns and Wilodge Ulex sold for 6500gns to Jim Innes.
Other females to have made an impact at Wilodge are Canvin Iris and Canvin Imrie who were bought privately in August 1994. Imrie is the mother of Wilodge Meatmaster who sold during the height of BSE in 1996 for the record price 10,500gns. We also bought Nether Lucretia who bred Wilodge Supernova who was reserve supreme champion at the Royal Show in 2002 and Ridge Dean Niagra who was bought from Chelford for 2000gns and has bred well for us.
Other sale highlights include Wilodge Ubitus who was sold privately to Genus Breeding, Wilodge Whatshisname who sold in May 2006 for 5000gns, Wilodge Vantastic who sold in September 2004 for 8200gns and Wilodge Clinique who sold to Graham Jones for 3600gns.
We currently only have two British Blue females at Wilodge. These are split embryo females out of Wilodge Uptown Girl by Wilodge Ulex. These will be flushed in the near future to start the next chapter of British Blue cattle at Wilodge.
